I know that in AE academic contexts, ‘paper’ usually means ‘essay’. However, I had assumed that the UK usage would be the same as NZ usage – I would call a full university course/class a ‘paper’. For example “English 101: Introduction to modern literature” would be a ‘paper’. (You can see ‘paper’ used interchangeably with ‘course’ on this New Zealand university website, if you are so inclined.)
It seems, though, that ‘paper’ doesn’t have this meaning in UK English? If I said “I did a paper on the French Revolution”, would a BE speaker assume I took an exam on this subject? Or that I wrote an essay on this topic? Does anyone else use paper in this sense?
