phd thesis defense
Between October 1st and 15th, the PhD students will have to apply for the thesis defense following the instructions provided by e-mail by the PhD office. Once the thesis is finished, the file must be uploaded in the student’s Personal Area, and then validated by the supervisor some days in advance of the date of the thesis defense.
In short, students are supposed to submit some documents to the PhD Academic Board, including the thesis. The Board will give an advice on the student’s admission to the thesis defense and appoint, for each PhD student, two referees in charge of reviewing the thesis. The reviewers will decide if the thesis is ready to be defended or if it needs some editing, which might take up to 6 months of work. After that, the thesis will be admitted to the defense in any case.
The Ph.D. thesis is the intended outcome of the doctoral training period.
As a general rule, you must have been enrolled on your Ph.D. program for at least 24 months before initianing thesis defense proceedings. The Academic Committee will establish the requirements for the public review of your thesis and propose the members of the dissertation committee. The Doctoral School Board is to approve this proposal and authorize the dissertation event.

Dates for the PhD examination cannot be set before the thesis is found worthy of public defence. See deadlines in connection with holidays.

Institutions in which dissertation modules are studied have a responsibility to cultivate a research culture that encourages creativity. The dissertation is an opportunity for students to move away from the security associated with traditional methods of research: to engage with novel and sophisticated methods.
This paper introduces the concept of the dissertation as an experiential method of learning about research. Undertaking a dissertation can be seen as proof of graduateness and the gold standard of undergraduate and postgraduate assessment. The skills demanded in research and concept analysis are compared. The requirements of demonstrating rigour and scholarship in dissertations, usually associated with traditional research methods, are shown to be present in concept analysis. There is a justification for concept analysis as a dissertation research method on the basis that the purpose of research is to expand a body of knowledge through a process of systematic and scientific enquiry.

Your thesis proposal will likely include terms that are not widely known outside of your discipline. These terms include particular theoretical constructs, formulas, operational definitions that differ from colloquial definitions, schools of thought and discipline-specific acronyms. This part of your proposal offers the reader a list of definitions of these terms.
