Both ‘PhD’ and ‘DPhil’ are abbreviations for ‘Doctor of Philosophy’, which is an advanced research qualification usually involving independent research to write an original thesis. It usually takes three to four years of full-time study or six to eight years of part-time study to complete.
Successfully completing a DPhil usually involves submitting a thesis and then an oral examination of your work, a viva voce . Examiners must be satisfied that your thesis represents a significant and substantial piece of research, is conveyed in a lucid and scholarly manner and that you have a good general knowledge of your academic field.

Question pretty self-explanatory. Should the abbreviation of the Latin term philosophiae doctor be written as PhD (no periods) or Ph.D. (with periods)?
The OALD gives an interesting distinction, stating that Ph.D. is especially North American English.

The present study was conducted to translate and validate the Short Muslim Practice and Belief Scale (SMPBS) (AlMarri, Oei, & Al-Adawi, 2009) to have a culturally equivalent and linguistically accurate Urdu version for use in Pakistan. Forward backward translation method was used for translation followed by tryout of the scale. Urdu translated version of the scale was completed by 500 participants of different age groups ( M = 36.5, SD = 10.1). Based on a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), results confirmed that a two-factor model with the factors practice and belief provided an excellent fit to the data with chi square 55.96 ( df = 26, p > .05), CFI =.96, GFI = .97, and RMSEA = .04. Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient was .78. Cross-language validation determined on a sample of 60 participants was satisfactory. Convergent validity of the scale was established by finding its significant positive correlation with religious practice and belief scale ( r = .64, p r = –.18, p * Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to Saba Ghayas. The original Viva Italia trophy was begun in 1982 and presented by John as a special award at the season awards banquet, using an ever-changing selection criteria known only to him and revealed to the expectant audience with great fanfare (and general hilarity). In 1997, John changed the award to a special trophy presented to the fastest man and woman in the annual SL at Heavenly Valley, his racing and skiing home, using an age-handicapping formula similar to the Bernard Cup combined trophy scoring.

Phd-dissertation
Students work closely with their PhD supervisor and committee while conducting their PhD research and in writing the dissertation. The final product typically consists of three article-length chapters, an introduction and a conclusion.
The dissertation is the capstone piece of the PhD education. It represents an independent and original piece of scholarship and demonstrates the doctoral candidate’s mastery of both content material and the research process. Doctoral candidates complete their dissertation after finishing coursework, passing their comprehensive exams and receiving approval for their thesis proposal from their dissertation committee.

A candidate must present a dissertation demonstrating original and independent investigation and achievement. A dissertation should reflect not only a mastery of research techniques, but also ability to select an important problem for investigation, and to deal with it competently.
For information about submitting a dissertation, please see Thesis/Dissertation.

CGS is leading the graduate community in discussions about the future of the PhD dissertation, and we invite you to join us.

In my research, I analyse the nature and size of these effects on different developing countries.
