The PhD dissertation is a research document that makes a significant and original contribution to existing knowledge in the discipline. While the precise form of the dissertation will vary by field, the dissertation’s fundamental function as an element of doctoral training is to attest to the author’s capacity to produce novel scholarship independently according to the standards of a particular academic discipline. This is why the final requirement of the dissertation is for it to undergo an examination by a panel of scholars in the field who can ascertain the originality of the argument advanced as well as its adherence to the conventions of the discipline.

The Northumbria Dissertation Repository was launched in October 2015 to share the best of the university’s undergraduate research in History. While online repositories already exist for postgraduate theses, few include undergraduate research – despite the fact that many dissertations are original in conception, argument, and in their use of primary sources.
We hope to add further examples of undergraduate research to the repository in subsequent years, thereby developing it as a useful resource.

The School retains a number of undergraduate dissertations each year for use in teaching and learning, and to celebrate the excellent quality of our students’ research activities.
They are provided as exemplars, for reference only, and should not be downloaded, copied or transmitted in whole or in part, in any format. They should not be copied or provided to any other person.

Special Collectons store The Library’s extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts, historical photographs, engraved portraits and archives provides a wealth of opportunities for student dissertations and projects. The collection spans over 800 years of history, ranging from illuminated medieval manuscripts to archive collections documenting aspects of 20 th century history. This guide provides an overview of the collections by period, offering suggested research areas and dissertation topics for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students.

Find Dissertations by searching Dissertations and Theses (Dissertation Abstracts) which indexes graduate dissertations from over 1,000 North American, and selected European, graduate schools and universities from 1861 to the present. Dissertations published since 1980 include brief abstracts written by the authors and some feature 24-page excerpts. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and some full text coverage for older graduate works.
Older dissertations not available full text may be obtained through Interlibrary Loan or using the Request option in Melvyl.

This article explores the extent to which published advice on the organisation and structure of theses and dissertations concurs with what happens in actual practice. The study examines guides and handbooks which focus on thesis and dissertation writing and postgraduate research. The sample texts examined were master’s and doctoral theses written in a number of different study areas at a major research university. The study found that only a few of the books examined devoted a substantial amount of space to this topic. It also found a wider range of thesis types than the guides and handbooks would suggest occurs. The study identified four main kinds of thesis: ‘traditional: simple’, ‘traditional: complex’, ‘topic-based’ and ‘compilations of research articles’. The article argues for teaching materials which show students the range of thesis options they might have, highlight the kind of variation that occurs in actual texts, and consider the rationale for the various choices they might make.

A thesis statement is a sentence that states the topic and purpose of your paper. A good thesis statement will direct the structure of your essay and will allow your reader to understand the ideas you will discuss within your paper.
Your thesis should be stated somewhere in the opening paragraphs of your paper, most often as the last sentence of the introduction. Often, a thesis will be one sentence, but for complex subjects, you may find it more effective to break the thesis statement into two sentences.

Development of these guides began in 1993, when the original Online Writing Center was developed for campus use at Colorado State University. A dissertation is a subject you chose for yourself. The first usage of the word in the English language in 1651 also gives a useful starting definition: “an extended written treatment of a subject”.

Two process sequences for the fabrication of Ni-Cu plated solar cells with a selective emitter by means of laser processing are presented. The purpose of the highly doped deep emitter is in this case not only to lower the contact resistance but to prevent shunting by nickel silicide which grows into the wafer. This silicide formation is found to be a key step in creating excellent contact adhesion. SEM imaging has been used to characterize the coverage of contact openings with nickel silicide. Electrical and mechanical properties of the fabricated solar cells as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the presented process sequences are discussed using SunsVoc and peel force measurements.
