Your research proposal is an important part of the application process. It summarises the question you want to answer through your research. It demonstrates your knowledge of the subject area and shows the methods you want to use to complete your research.
We use research proposals to match you with your supervisor or supervisor team. You can contact one of our Research Leads or an academic whose work you are interested in to discuss your proposal. If you are interested in the work of a specific academic at York St John University you should mention this in your proposal.

CHECKLIST FOR TABLE OF CONTENTS
The Table of Contents (TOC) is an organized listing of the chapters and major sections of your document. Readers will immediately be able to see how your manuscript is organized and then skip down to sections that are most relevant to them. A clear, concise, and well formatted TOC is the first indicator of a good research paper.

On R is My Friend, as a way to procrastinate on his own dissertation, beckmw took a look at dissertation length via the digital archives at the University of Minnesota.

I’ve selected the top fifty majors with the highest number of dissertations and created boxplots to show relative distributions. Not many differences are observed among the majors, although some exceptions are apparent. Economics, mathematics, and biostatistics had the lowest median page lengths, whereas anthropology, history, and political science had the highest median page lengths. This distinction makes sense given the nature of the disciplines.

In exceptional circumstances, the Dean—Wellington Faculty of Graduate Research may grant permission for you to submit a longer thesis. You will need to apply for permission to exceed the word limit well in advance of submission.

I was on the long end of the statistics distribution, around 180 pages. Probably because I had a lot of pictures.
As I was working on my dissertation, people often asked me how many pages I had written and how many pages I had left to write. I never had a good answer, because there’s no page limit or required page count. It’s just whenever you (and your adviser) feel like there’s enough to get a point across. Sometimes that takes 50 pages. Other times it takes 200.

The masters thesis and doctoral dissertation are written documents that describe the graduate student’s research. The subject of the thesis/dissertation is chosen by mutual agreement between the student and major adviser, and must be approved by the student’s Supervisory Committee. There is no fixed length for the thesis/dissertation, although the Supervisory Committee should provide guidance on format and content.
Masters theses should reveal a capacity to carry on independent study or research and should demonstrate the student’s ability to use the techniques employed in their field of investigation. Doctoral dissertations should demonstrate technical mastery of the student’s field and advance or modify current knowledge. Dissertations should treat new material, find new results, or draw new conclusions; or it should interpret old material in a new light. It is expected that the research contained in the thesis/dissertation will be worthy of publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals. Students are expected to prepare the manuscript(s) for publication prior to, or soon after, completion of their graduate program.

This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with 277 nurses in a stratified random sample from a university hospital in Turkey. The data were collected from nurses who gave their informed consent to participate using a personal information form, the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II and Bar-On’s Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-I). Data were assessed by descriptive statistics, t tests, and Pearson correlation analyses, using SPSS software.
The levels of the nurses’ strategies were as follows: avoiding (M = 2.98), dominating (M = 2.76), and obliging (M = 2.71) were medium; compromising (M = 1.99) and integration (M = 1.96) were low. The levels of the emotional intelligence of nurses (mean = 2.75) were medium on a 5-point scale. Integration (r = .168), obliging (r = .25), dominating (r = .18), and compromising (r = .33), which are conflict management strategies, were positively correlated with scores of emotional intelligence, and avoiding (r = −.25) was negatively correlated with scores of emotional intelligence (p

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Guidelines fully adopts the central guidelines for a thesis including published works as set out in:
A: There is no defined number of publications. The paramount consideration is that the material presented for examination should equate to that which would otherwise be presented using the traditional thesis format. This remains a matter of professional judgement for the supervisors and candidates.

The deadline to submit theses for August 2020 degree conferral is noon on Friday, August 14. Be sure to upload your signed title page before submitting your thesis.
COVID-19 Change: In the event that a thesis committee must change from what was previously approved, please confer with your graduate program administrator as soon as possible prior to your defense, and follow the instructions in section B here. The committee must still adhere all of the existing rules for composition in the General Announcements and all changes must be approved by your Department Chair or DGS as well as Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Due to COVID-19, defending your graduate thesis or dissertation in person is likely off the table. That doesn’t mean you have to wait to defend. Many schools and programs are allowing remote defenses — meaning you could find yourself defending from your living room! In this presentation, a recent psychology doctoral student that completed a remote defense, a current dean of psychology, and APA’s Office of Graduate and Postgraduate Education and Training, share how to prepare for and complete your thesis or dissertation defense remotely.
Alvin Akibar, PhD, is a recent doctoral recipient from the University of North Texas. Hideko Sera, PsyD, is the associate dean of the School of Education of the University of Redlands. Garth A. Fowler, PhD, is associate executive director of the APA Office of Graduate and Postgraduate Education and Training (Education Directorate) and will serve as moderator.

  • a rhetorical question
  • a quotation
  • a definition
  • an interesting fact
  • a question that will be answered in your paper
  • some background information on your topic

Follow the steps below to formulate an argumentative thesis statement. All boxes must contain text. To learn how to write other kinds of thesis statements, please see our Writing a Thesis page.

A thesis statement is a sentence that states the topic and purpose of your paper. A good thesis statement will direct the structure of your essay and will allow your reader to understand the ideas you will discuss within your paper.
Your thesis should be stated somewhere in the opening paragraphs of your paper, most often as the last sentence of the introduction. Often, a thesis will be one sentence, but for complex subjects, you may find it more effective to break the thesis statement into two sentences.

Your dissertation may be the longest piece of writing you have ever done, but there are ways to approach it that will help to make it less overwhelming.
You don’t have to start with the introduction – start at the chapter that seems the easiest to write

define theses

Your thesis proposal will likely include terms that are not widely known outside of your discipline. These terms include particular theoretical constructs, formulas, operational definitions that differ from colloquial definitions, schools of thought and discipline-specific acronyms. This part of your proposal offers the reader a list of definitions of these terms.

  • How you define such terms could considerably affect how the reader understands your thesis
  • Be sure you use these terms in a consistent fashion throughout your proposal and thesis
