Take a lead role in Accepted Student Day and Student Orientation Academic Advising
In this NeuroView, I provide a guide for young scientists on how to select a graduate advisor or postdoctoral advisor. Good mentorship is not only pivotal for career success, but it is pivotal for driving innovation and for the health of our universities. Universities need to do much more to teach faculty how to mentor and to ensure mentoring quality. I propose an M-index to measure mentoring quality. I also call here for better studies of what great mentorship entails, better reward for great mentors, and more consideration of mentoring quality when awarding prizes and grants.

Continuing graduate students who are unable to complete a comprehensive examination or who receive incompletes for projects or thesis/dissertation issued in spring 2020 can complete their culminating activity in summer of 2020. They will not be required to register for GS 700 during the summer. They will formally graduate during the spring term as long as their culminating activity requirements are completed by August 7, 2020. Students should contact their Department Graduate Advisor to take advantage of this extension.
In response to closed testing sites due to COVID-19, many of our programs are waiving the GRE exam as an entrance requirement. Please check with your Department Graduate Advisor to see if GRE or other standardized testing is required for Fall 2020 applications. If it is, please refer to this list of College Entrance Exam Testing Alternatives.
If you have additional questions about our programs and the steps to apply, please attend an information session. You will receive valuable information about our nursing programs prior to the application process.

The advisor/student relationship is one of mutual agreement, which may be terminated by either party. If a student changes advisors, they need to notify their program coordinator. It is the responsibility of every graduate student to have an advisor. If students do not have an advisor, the Graduate School may suspend them from further graduate study at UW–Madison until they find an advisor. However, in some cases, particularly for incoming students, the program may assign an advisor.
An advisor is a faculty member from the program responsible for providing advice regarding graduate studies and for supervising a student’s degree program (including research). An advisor—sometimes referred to as the major professor, mentor, or trainer—generally serves as chair of a student’s final examination committee.
Prospective and new students should call 402.554-3819 to schedule appointments.
