sample critical review

Students often, and sensibly ask for example CRs (critical reviews). Often if you go to the right PAL session, the facilitators will bring theirs in as examples. If you do the reciprocal peer critiquing exericse in your tutorial group(s), where each student reads and comments on two other CRs, then you will have seen examples.

  • Effects of group therapy in breast cancer: survival and psychosocial benefits by Sarah Gunn.
This CR has an especially interesting structure: picking pairs of papers showing opposite findings on each of 3 points, so as to get critical points from the literature; and then adding a conclusion of the reviewer’s own critical conclusions (about the literature).

Reading a scientific article is a complex task. The worst way to approach this task is to treat it like the reading of a textbook—reading from title to literature cited, digesting every word along the way without any reflection or criticism.
A critical review (sometimes called a critique, critical commentary, critical appraisal, critical analysis) is a detailed commentary on and critical evaluation of a text. You might carry out a critical review as a stand-alone exercise, or as part of your research and preparation for writing a literature review. The following guidelines are designed to help you critically evaluate a research article.

A research instrument is a tool used to obtain, measure, and analyze data from subjects around the research topic. You need to decide the instrument to use based on the type of study you are conducting: quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method. For instance, for a quantitative study, you may decide to use a questionnaire, and for a qualitative study, you may choose to use a scale. While it helps to use an established instrument, as its efficacy is already established, you may if needed use a new instrument or even create your own instrument. You need to describe the instrument(s) used in the Methods section of the paper.

These guides are the result of a joint effort of the [email protected] project and the Colorado State University Writing Center. Development of these guides began in 1993, when the original Online Writing Center was developed for campus use at Colorado State University. Several guides were developed in Asymmetrix Multimedia Toolbook and then migrated to the web in 1996. Over the years, additional guides were developed and revised, reflecting the efforts of many writers and writing teachers. We thank them for their generosity.
